Fine Tuning is the process of making minor changes to the database in the areas of the front end or user interface. When fine tuning is carried out, we often find that the users business practices have been modified in order to streamline certain processes, therefore requiring some modifications. To illustrate: at Electrical Services Limited, all orders are now received online and therefore the information received from the client is in a different format and therefore data entry into a sales invoice needs to be altered to make data entry quicker and simpler. The change requires some auto-fill boxes for many of the fields and a change in the order in which the information is input. Essential to make the business flow smoother, they request these minor tweaks. It does not mean a total redesign to the underlying table structure, rather amendments to the screen layout and some incorporation of auto fill-in boxes to assist in the speeding up of tedious entry areas. This kind of adjustment is often carried out within a few days and we can upload the new interface to the users machines out of hours to avoid disruption to daily use. Most tweaks are usually low-cost and are based on time taken to make the changes. If the client is on a subscription, this would reduce those one-off costs of tweaks.
We do liaise with our clients to ensure we get as much of the layout as close as possible to the end-users requirements during the project development. Having said that, often the end-user is unaware of what will work for them and therefore we provide ample opportunity for tweaks in the development stages. Once the database has been completed, minor tweaks can often be quite time-consuming for us, so depending on what tweaks are required, there may be a cost for the changes made, but we are reasonable and we evaluate whether we should charge based upon how well we have conveyed the result to you. If we deem that we have misunderstood your requirements, then it is more likely we would perform these changes free of charge. Again, we do inform you at the time that we will be finalising the system, so you have ample opportunity to evaluate the system prior to us commencing the finalisation. Suffice to say, we would explain that from hereonin no adjustments can be made. That is why we rely on the users to thoroughly test the system and approve of the system thus far!
